USIAA Sailing Rules:
Scholarship and Roster Rules:
- All programs can only have a minimum of 18 players (i.e. 9 men & 9 women) & a maximum of 66 players (33 men & 33 women) during the regular season; this limit is lifted to 122 total players for preseason tryouts only.
- All programs can choose whether to allow athletic scholarships or not; start-up programs are given a max of 5 years to decide whether or not to provide athletic scholarships to players.
- 5 points for 1st place.
- 4 points for 2nd place.
- 3 points for 3rd place.
- 2 points for 4th place.
- 1 point for 5th place.
- 0 points for 6th place or worse.
- The USIAA will use the same rules as the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).
- The USIAA will use any combination of the following types of boats for all invitationals:
a) Offshore
b) Dinghy (i.e., Flying Juniors/FJ, 420's, Vanguard 15's, Flying Scots, Hobies, etc.)
c) Keelboat (i.e., Navy 44's, Navy 26's, Tarten 10's, U20's, etc.)
d) Singlehanded
e) Lasers
f) MC scows
g) J133's
h) Sonars - There are 4 positions:
a) Skipper
b) Light Wind Crew
c) Medium Wind Crew
d) Strong Wind Crew
e) these positions may be filled by any gender.
- All programs play an 18-invitational season (may only host 2; 1 in the fall & 1 in the spring) beginning on the first Saturday of September and ending on the last Sunday prior to Memorial Day in May:
a) 9 invitationals are in the fall semester and the other 9 are in the spring semester after winter break.
b) The fall season begins on the first Saturday of September and ends on the last Sunday of October.
c) The spring season begins on the third Saturday of February and ends on the last Sunday prior to Memorial Day in May. - The USIAA will use any combination of the following formats/events for all invitationals:
a) fleet racing
b) team racing; Team racing employs the low points scoring system. The boat finishing 1st scores 1 point, 2nd scores 2 points, etc. The points scored by the boats in each team are added together. The team scoring fewest points wins.
c) match racing
d) All events must be coed (i.e. at least 1 man & 1 woman), if possible.
e) All invitationals must have at least 8 teams & no more than 19 teams. - The USIAA Championship is a team tournament for each event beginning on the second week after the regular season ends:
a) The top 8 schools in each region will compete in the regionals.
b) Match Race, Men’s Singlehanded and Women’s Singlehanded Championships are in the fall.
c) Coed and Team Race Championships are in the spring.
