Rules for USIAA Multi-Sport Athletes:
- All USIAA athletes can only play a max of 2 sports during one academic school year, regardless of what division they play in. The only exception includes a athlete participating in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.
- In USIAA sports, a student-athlete’s grant-in-aid/scholarship may count in only one sport, no matter how many sports he or she participates in. Therefore, the question is which sport does a student-athlete count and how is that determination made.
- Anyone who participates in football is counted in that sport unless they do not receive financial aid from the football program. this also includes athletes at non-scholarship programs who receive aid in another sport.
- Participants in basketball are counted in that sport, unless they also play football & receive an athletic scholarship (sprint football doesn't count).
- Participants in men's ice hockey are counted in that sport, unless they also play football or basketball & receive an athletic scholarship (sprint football doesn't count).
- Participants in both men's swimming and diving and men's water polo are counted in swimming and diving, unless they count in football or basketball.
- Participants in women's (indoor) volleyball are counted in that sport unless they also play basketball.
- All other multi-sport athletes are counted in whichever sport the school chooses.
- The USIAA allows a professional athlete to participate in a college or university sports program if 1) the athlete has remaining eligibility, and 2) the participation is in a different sport than the player’s professional sport.
